Top 10 Cannabis Studies the Government Wished it Had Never Funded
10) MARIJUANA USE HAS NO EFFECT ON MORTALITY:
A massive study of California HMO members funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) found marijuana use caused no significant increase in mortality. Tobacco use was associated with increased risk of death. Sidney, S et al. Marijuana Use and Mortality. American Journal of Public Health. Vol. 87 No. 4, April 1997. p. 585-590. Sept. 2002.
9) HEAVY MARIJUANA USE AS A YOUNG ADULT WON’T RUIN YOUR LIFE:
Veterans Affairs scientists looked at whether heavy marijuana use as a young adult caused long-term problems later, studying identical twins in which one twin had been a heavy marijuana user for a year or longer but had stopped at least one month before the study, while the second twin had used marijuana no more than five times ever. Marijuana use had no significant impact on physical or mental health care utilization, health-related quality of life, or current socio-demographic characteristics. Eisen SE et al. Does Marijuana Use Have Residual Adverse Effects on Self-Reported Health Measures, Socio-Demographics or Quality of Life? A Monozygotic Co-Twin Control Study in Men. Addiction. Vol. 97 No. 9. p.1083-1086. Sept.
1997
8) THE “GATEWAY EFFECT” MAY BE A MIRAGE:
Marijuana is often called a “gateway drug” by supporters of prohibition, who point to statistical “associations” indicating that persons who use marijuana are more likely to eventually try hard drugs than those who never use marijuana – implying that marijuana use somehow causes hard drug use. But a model developed by RAND Corp. researcher Andrew Morral demonstrates that these associations can be explained “without requiring a gateway effect.” More likely, this federally funded study suggests, some people simply have an underlying propensity to try drugs, and start with what’s most readily available. Morral AR, McCaffrey D and Paddock S. Reassessing the Marijuana Gateway Effect. Addiction. December 2002. p. 1493-1504.
7) PROHIBITION DOESN’T WORK (PART I):
The White House had the National Research Council examine the data being gathered about drug use and the effects of U.S. drug policies. NRC concluded, “the nation possesses little information about the effectiveness of current drug policy, especially of drug law enforcement.” And what data exist show “little apparent relationship between severity of sanctions prescribed for drug use and prevalence or frequency of use.” In other words, there is no proof that prohibition – the cornerstone of U.S. drug policy for a century – reduces drug use. National Research Council. Informing America’s Policy on Illegal Drugs: What We Don’t Know Keeps Hurting Us. National Academy Press, 2001. p. 193.
6) PROHIBITION DOESN’T WORK (PART II):
DOES PROHIBITION CAUSE THE “GATEWAY EFFECT”?): U.S. and Dutch researchers, supported in part by NIDA, compared marijuana users in San Francisco, where non-medical use remains illegal, to Amsterdam, where adults may possess and purchase small amounts of marijuana from regulated businesses. Looking at such parameters as frequency and quantity of use and age at onset of use, they found no differences except one: Lifetime use of hard drugs was significantly lower in Amsterdam, with its “tolerant” marijuana policies. For example, lifetime crack cocaine use was 4.5 times higher in San Francisco than Amsterdam. Reinarman, C, Cohen, PDA, and Kaal, HL. The Limited Relevance of Drug Policy: Cannabis in Amsterdam and San Francisco. American Journal of Public Health. Vol. 94, No. 5. May 2004. p. 836-842.
5) OOPS, MARIJUANA MAY PREVENT CANCER (PART I):
Federal researchers implanted several types of cancer, including leukemia and lung cancers, in mice, then treated them with cannabinoids (unique, active components found in marijuana). THC and other cannabinoids shrank tumors and increased the mice’s lifespans. Munson, AE et al. Antineoplastic Activity of Cannabinoids. Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Sept. 1975. p. 597-602.
4) OOPS, MARIJUANA MAY PREVENT CANCER, (PART II):
In a 1994 study the government tried to suppress, federal researchers gave mice and rats massive doses of THC, looking for cancers or other signs of toxicity. The rodents given THC lived longer and had fewer cancers, “in a dose-dependent manner” (i.e. the more THC they got, the fewer tumors). NTP Technical Report On The Toxicology And Carcinogenesis Studies Of 1-Trans- Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol, CAS No. 1972-08-3, In F344/N Rats And B6C3F Mice, Gavage Studies. See also, “Medical Marijuana: Unpublished Federal Study Found THC-Treated Rats Lived Longer, Had Less Cancer,” AIDS Treatment News no. 263, Jan. 17, 1997.
3) OOPS, MARIJUANA MAY PREVENT CANCER (PART III):
Researchers at the Kaiser-Permanente HMO, funded by NIDA, followed 65,000 patients for nearly a decade, comparing cancer rates among non-smokers, tobacco smokers, and marijuana smokers. Tobacco smokers had massively higher rates of lung cancer and other cancers. Marijuana smokers who didn’t also use tobacco had no increase in risk of tobacco-related cancers or of cancer risk overall. In fact their rates of lung and most other cancers were slightly lower than non-smokers, though the difference did not reach statistical significance. Sidney, S. et al. Marijuana Use and Cancer Incidence (California, United States). Cancer Causes and Control. Vol. 8. Sept. 1997, p. 722-728.
2) OOPS, MARIJUANA MAY PREVENT CANCER (PART IV):
Donald Tashkin, a UCLA researcher whose work is funded by NIDA, did a case-control study comparing 1,200 patients with lung, head and neck cancers to a matched group with no cancer. Even the heaviest marijuana smokers had no increased risk of cancer, and had somewhat lower cancer risk than non-smokers (tobacco smokers had a 20-fold increased lung cancer risk). Tashkin D. Marijuana Use and Lung Cancer: Results of a Case-Control Study. American Thoracic Society International Conference. May 23, 2006.
1) MARIJUANA DOES HAVE MEDICAL VALUE:
In response to passage of California’s medical marijuana law, the White House had the Institute of Medicine (IOM) review the data on marijuana’s medical benefits and risks. The IOM concluded, “Nausea, appetite loss, pain and anxiety are all afflictions of wasting, and all can be mitigated by marijuana.” While noting potential risks of smoking, the report added, “we acknowledge that there is no clear alternative for people suffering from chronic conditions that might be relieved by smoking marijuana, such as pain or AIDS wasting.” The government’s refusal to acknowledge this finding caused co-author John A. Benson to tell the New York Times that the government “loves to ignore our report … they would rather it never happened.” Joy, JE, Watson, SJ, and Benson, JA. Marijuana and Medicine: Assessing the Science Base. National Academy Press. 1999. p. 159. See also, Harris, G. FDA Dismisses Medical Benefit From Marijuana. New York Times. Apr.

Well duh! Now hopefully our government will see, “Hey, this might not be a bad thing after all” but if only we all can be that hopeful. Millions of people smoke marijuana everyday, and not one person has ever died via overdose on THC. We need to open our eyes, open our minds and see a better solution to our crime rate, jail over crowding, drug abuse, trillion dollar deficit, and especially the REAL facts about marijuana use.
Legalizing & Taxing marijuana would make it a hell of a lot easier to get those “drug tax stamps” every state has and no one even uses, take the money out of the criminals and gangs hands and give it to people who will responsibly use it, help open up space in jail for VIOLENT crimes [marijuana & drug arrests make up more than half of the people that should really be there: violent criminals.] Marijuana would definitely make it a happier place for everyone, and the police could focus on actually solving murders, rapes, and kidnappings, things WE SHOULD BE AFRAID OF!
Drug abusers could actually get the help they need if we left jails for violent crimes only, sending an addict to jail does nothing to help their issues and lets them fall prey to their only way of life after [or if] they ever get out of jail.
They know its not bad the issue is the vast majority of people who end up smoking pot then realize how bullsh*t everything is and that the govt is essentially running our lives, now if you were part of the global elite you wouldnt want people to have easy access to a such a substance which is why they call it the gateway drug to scare people away from the truth of its “magical” properties.
Hell ya man, this means start token!
Look, I don’t smoke pot and I can tell you that I wish I could. I have never supported the war on drugs OR the prohibition of marijuana. I think what has been written in this article needs to be spread across the internet as fast as possible. I would love the RIGHT to access medicinal marijuana, and I think that a lot of sick people would also appreciate the RIGHT to information like this.
That is all I have to say about that.
This article would hold some level of credibility if it had links to those supposed statistics.
Hmm…. They gave you the fucking names and places and the names of the papers written and people involved. How much shit do you need?
You can find every one of those articles in any self-respecting public library. They even gave you the page numbers. This article has full credibility.
It’s a shame they only gave specific details to where they obtained all their statistics. If I can’t click a link to an anonymous website, I refuse to believe the author may have done research.
Most medical journal articles can not be read for free on the net. You have to go to a library and get access that way. If you are too lazy to do that, then That becomes your very own personal problem, not something to bleat about publicly.
Its amazing how the government can put regulations and laws on the very plants that grow naturally on this rock we call Earth. If not for the tobacco, alcohol, and pharmaceutical lobbyists paying large dividends to suppress any information positively regarding marijuana people would have a better understanding of the plant. A majority of people were taught since third grade that marijuana will make you murder, rape, steal. Reefer Madness it is sometimes referred to. Its astounding that such biased and untrue material has plagued the American people. Cannabis is a medicinal plant not to mention its hundreds of other uses. I’m not saying that i partake in the burning of said plant, but if i theoretically did, i would say to others to do the same. Free your mind, and learn the true facts about the plant by which you know best as a “bad drug”.
Solid list. Doesn’t it just seem silly at this point that they’re still trying to portray marijuana as dangerous. If it’s not legalized in the next 5 years then I’ve lost all faith in humanity.
theres a few of these i had never heard of before. great find. marijuana preventing cancer is one of my main focus’ at the moment… im glad to see it being shared amongst a greater number of people.
nice!! thank you government funding

First
They could have found that it makes the user immortal and it still would be illegal.
Are you that stupid? Read your comment again. Do you really think it would be a good thing if that were the case? Yes. Pot makes your pretty stupid.
Your pretty stupid what?
Google patent 6630507. The US government has a patent on marijuana.
legalize it
It bloody well does ruin a young persons life! It makes you poor!!
No, not watching your spending makes you poor. If you can’t afford to smoke 20 grams a month then don’t, idiot. Its a lesson young people learn about everything, from clothing, to textbooks… seriously man that statement is just unfounded.I know young people that have thrown tuns of money on beauty products and fad items and they had the freedom to do that.
Too bad this can’t be seen by everyone in our society.
Awesome post!!!!
I suspected as much…
FREE WEED WORLDWIDE!!
you do know that 5 of these are the same thing right? i mean just because you split it up into 2 3 4 5 doesnt make it any different. But then again you where probably high when u put this together
They’re four different studies, funded by different organisations and running different tests. The author gave them the same title (Part I etc) in recognition of the fact that they all ended with the same conclusion.
I agree with Joe that I would want links to the statistics before believing the whole article though.
Oh, U.S. government, when will you finally admit you’re wrong? We all know it, your lies are quite obvious, y’know. First Reefer Madness, than Pot-to-Commie, than it ruins your life (which, really U.S. government, is your fault!) and makes a person with no individuality and easily manipulated.
Now it’s “Just say no,” what, running out of lies? (:
Don’t penalize, legalize!
great share man. theres some points here i had never read. great stuff bro!

please take a moment to view my documentary on the first public pot club in the USa..filmed in 1995 in san francisco

There are a couple of people here that keep saying,” a link to the statistics”. Every point is annotated and bookmarked. If you don’t believe what you are reading, copy the articles that are posted at the end of every point and go research it yourself. There is no reason to believe anything anyone tells you without going and hunting down the leads on your own. Not the government, not this website, however when all the facts are there for you to follow up, what is it exactly that you are doubting? Yourself?
Don’t feed the trolls. There is more proof out there than this silly article. These days, if people want the truth (scientific evidence supporting medical marijuana), all they have to do is look for 5 seconds.

I write a blog about my experiences, voyages in search of altered states of consciousness with the hope of finding a deeper meaning in life. I consider myself, for a want of a better word, a spiritual seeker. I have been reading books, listening to a few self-styled new-age Gurus, and have been doing some thinking of my own. I am not a junkie. I consider myself a normal person with a normal job and a family to look after. I had heard and read about people getting deep insights into great metaphysical truths while taking psychedelic drugs like LSD and cannabis. After a lot of initial hesitation I decided to try cannabis. I take it once in two or three months, which , you will agree, does not make me an addict. I take it orally, one flat spoon with any non-alcoholic liquid. I also practice meditation occasionally. I take cannabis , not for pleasure or to get a high, but to re-discover myself.
So has anyone actually read the source articles? They actually all say that pot is bad for you, they can’t prove that it isn’t bad or that the bad effects outweigh the good. One of them said that it is a good medicine for cancer patients, because it doesn’t matter that they get destroyed by the stuff.
It cures/prevents cancer…does anybody even know what that means? It kills cells off before they can become cancers (which is a bad thing, as you literally are killing your body)
I seriously don’t understand how anyone can spread such lies and twisted words on the internet and how others can flock around it and believe this shit without checking…
So the killing of self regenerating cells is a bad thing? You would rather let the cells grow and potentially become tumorous with no benefits? Yes you are “killing your body”, but these cell deaths are not permanent. If that were the case we would all be dead long ago from air pollution. Luckily these cells regrow, which is how cannabinoids can prevent cancer growth. Out with the old, in with the new.
Marijuana isn’t illegal because its bad for you, its illegal because it would cause competition for a shit ton of corporations because hemp is used for a wide range of things.. and it can be grown in such mass quantity that it would lose its value by A LOT. The government most definitely knows it’s not dangerous.
It’s also funny that us fellow potsmokers are actually educated people, everyone arguing against pot on this article sounds like an idiot..
